Our Story
“I founded A.M. Design and Fabrication as a means to an end; a way to fund my artistic practice in a sustainable way. Over the years that goal has morphed into something much bigger.”
Founder Alaina Mahoney inspects a forged mirror component, still hot from the fire.
A note from Alaina:
I grew up in Brockton, MA, a city known throughout the 19th century for making fine men’s shoes. Traversing the streets as a kid I gained a love and curiosity for found objects, most of which were metal. This interest inspired me to take my first foundry course at MassArt in Boston, which blew up into a desire to learn everything I could about metalwork.
I founded A.M. Design in 2015 after several years as a professional fabricator in order to continue this process of discovery on my own terms.
For me, every project is about revelation and improvement; how to apply our gathered knowledge to produce the best result in the most efficient way. I still look at metalwork through an artists’ eyes; I want to create beautiful objects that will outlast me by centuries.
The story of our logo
When I was little, I was always scratching my name into things. Aside from being a troublemaker, I think I had an obsession with leaving my mark. The A.M. Design logo is derived from one of those marks, scratched into a closet wall in my childhood home which I vector-scanned and edited for a bit of clarity. While my mark-making skills may have improved over time, I still have a desire to “leave my mark” on things I make today.
